How to stretch your dish soap to volumes

Before you know it you’d be on the last ounce of dish liquid soap and another item to remember for the grocery list. Dish soap is not expensive but it can be one less added cost when grocery shopping. Stretching your dish liquid soap can save you time and money in the long run. Many persons do not realize that the bottle of dish detergent they use in a week could easily stretch for three weeks! Simple DIY techniques can help stretch your dish soap.

Stretch your dish soap methods

Method 1: Make 2 liters of dish soap from 1 liter

You will need:

  • 1 LT Standard liquid dish soap
  • 2 tsp refined table salt
  • 1 LT less 1/2 cup of water
  • 1/2 cup white vinegar (for spot free dry)
  • Empty 1 LT bottle

Steps:

In a large bowl empty the bottle of dish soap.

Dissolve salt in small amount of water.

Add liter of water and salt mixture to the bowl.

Stir mildly to avoid excess suds. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar and stir for a few more seconds.

Pour dish liquid in the two 1 liter bottles. This is an easy way to stretch your dish soap.

 

Method 2: Make 4 Liters of dish soap from 1 liter.

You will need:

  • 1 LT of any of the following: Dawn Ultra Dishwashing, Palmolive Ultra Dish Liquid or Joy Ultra Concentrated dish soap.
  • 1 tbsp refined table salt
  • 3 1/2 LT water
  • 500ml / 1 qt white vinegar (for spot free dry)
  • 4 empty 1 liter bottles

Steps:

In a very large bowl or saucepan, empty the bottle of dish soap.

Dissolve salt in small amount of water.

Add water and salt mixture to the bowl.

Stir mildly to avoid heavy suds. Add vinegar and stir for a few more seconds.

Pour dish liquid in the four one liter bottles.

You can mix or match and try different brands of dish liquids and mixtures. Salt helps soften the water which in turn helps dish soap maintain its effectiveness and consistency. Vinegar helps to reduce spotting of dishes and glasses after air drying and it also acts as a mild antibacterial agent. More water can be added to concentrated brands without losing its effectiveness. There are other methods to stretch your dish soap, but they may be more hazardous so I just focus on the safest and most natural methods.
